Microneedling, also known as medical needling or collagen induction therapy is a relatively new technique used for skin rejuvenation and has a wealth of clinical evidence to support its efficacy.

The term 'collagen' is quite a buzz word in the beauty and aesthetics world, and rightly so. Collagen along with elastin form the 'scaffolding' to our skin giving support, strength and elasticity. These strong protein fibres are surrounded by hyaluronic acid - our natural skin plumper and hydrator.

As a result of the ageing process, lifestyle choices and sun damage our collagen and elastin start to break down leading to fine lines, wrinkles, textural issues and larger pores. 

We know that any minor injury to the skin causes a healing response, including the formation of new collagen. This is the premise of microneedling.

Microneedling uses a series of fine sterile needles to repeatedly penetrate the layers of the skin. This results in the creation of thousands of controlled micro-injuries or 'microchannels' in both the upper (epidermis) and lower (dermis) layers which in turn ignites the natural cascade of healing events in the skin. This results in remodelling of the skin over the coming months to include new formation of collagen and elastin.

One important key feature of microneedling is the wound healing process is scarless. This is because the needle depth is controlled by great precision which, through the healing process, stimulates the production of the correct type of collagen. 

Microneedling is suitable for all skin tones and types all year round.

SkinPen Precision is clinically proven safe and effective. It is the only FDA cleared microneedling device and procedure that is CE marked and backed by more than 90 independent validation studies.

Microneedling is not to be confused with cosmetic needling. Cosmetic needling uses either stampers or rollers which are designed for home use and have a very shallow needle depth. The sole purpose of these is to enhance the penetration of your serums and moisturisers.

What can you expect?

The SkinPen  Precision treatment is simple, comfortable and effective. You will be invited for a free, no obligation consultation at which point we will discuss how microneedling can help you. We will also cover your medical history and medication and ensure there are no contra-indications. Importantly, we will also discuss what you can realistically expect from the treatment. You will also be offered a patch test for the anaesthetic cream.

The procedure itself includes a gentle cleansing to the skin followed by the application of a topical anaesthetic cream. Once the skin is numbed (after approximately 30 minutes) the disposable needle cartridge is applied to the pen and treatment commences. To treat the whole face takes 20-30 minutes. Depending on skin integrity and needle depth there will be some blood spotting, this is completely normal and indicates the start of the healing phase.

You can expect skin to be quite pink after, with the appearance of a moderate sunburn. This will fade over the following 2-3 days. Aftercare is crucial and will be discussed with you and a written copy supplied. An aftercare balm and moisturiser is included in your treatment price. I will keep in touch with you over the following days to ensure you have no concerns.

Topical anaesthetic cream contains lidocaine which is a prescription only drug. I (as a non-medic) have completed additional training to certify me to purchase and apply topical anaesthetic cream. You are welcome to view my SkinPen training certification. You may also welcome my 15 year NHS background as an Occupational Therapist during which time I gained a Master of Science degree in Health Care through Exeter University. I now also have 16 years experience in the beauty/skincare industry.
